I’ve been playing with the new version of Zune Software 3.0. It includes Zune Collection (manages your music collection), Zune Marketplace (purchase music), Zune Social (share music with other Zune members). Each section has sub-categories and there is a Zune Pass overlay (a subscription service).
Things I Like about Zune 3.0
- Different interface than Rhapsody or Napster or iTunes. Much cleaner and visual
- Nice organization of podcasts, videos, collection, etc.
- Easy integration with Zune devices. Much like Rhapsody DNA devices or iTunes/iPods
- Social profile component and friend connection
Things that I Don’t Like about Zune 3.0
- Doesn’t allow music playback via browsers. Must have the software downloaded.
- Zune 3.0 software is only windows - no Mac or Linux support.
- No editorial content, guidance, reviews.
- Song selection is smaller than Rhapsody or Napster
Summary Thoughts
Zune is an interesting but ultimately not compelling alternative to Rhapsody or Napster. The interface is different, cleaner, more visual but doesn’t let you pack as much information into a single screen. The lower number of available songs and inability to play music via a browser with my account or play on Mac is a big negative.
Recommendation:
- If you have a zune player, Zune Pass and Zune 3.0 software is worth getting.
- If you have an iPod, Sansa, Creative or any other MP3 player, skip Zune and get Rhapsody - it works better across a broader segment of players and devices - plus Rhapsody has more songs in the catalog.
