I’m so excited to see Bruce at the halftime show at the SuperBowl! I’ve been listening to the new Working on a Dream album on my new Mac Book Pro (speakers are much better than my old Dell D610) and Love it. I think it’s a Top 10 Bruce Album (I should rank my favorites one day). It’s great that my Rhapsody account works in the Safari browser on Mac - I wish they’d make a Mac version of the jukebox software. I digress.
The Bruce Springsteen album is great. It doesn’t have the raw energy of his earlier works, but Bruce can still write a great tune and incredible melodies.
- Outlaw Pete: a building, soaring classic Bruce Song.
- My Lucky Day: Up tempo, high energy song that could be right off of “The River”. A little - Clarence sax thrown in for good measure.
- Working on a Dream: the first single off of the album. I’m guessing that he plays it at the SuperBowl as it is time frame appropriate and event appropriate. I love the harmonies with Little Steven and Neils.
- Queen of the SuperMarket: I love the mental illustration of the queen of the supermarket. Patti’s back ground vocals add a haunting element.
- What Love Can Do: “Let me show you what Love can Do” - Bruce shows off the lower octave on this one.
- This Life: My least favorite song on the album. Has the same vocal sound as Living on a Dream without the great message or hook. Has kind of a Beach Boys vibe with the Bah, Bah, Bop, Bah’s. Clarence’s sax is a nice add to this song on the fade out.
- Good Eye: Bruce channels old black blues singer! I love this song, it’s raw, rough, bluesy and has a great harmonica harmony. Dig it!
- Tomorrow Never Knows: Opens like Looking Out My Back Door from CCR. Nice acoustic guitar and strong snare drum from Max. A great tune.
- Life Itself: A brooking, jangly number that’s a bit on the dark side. But I like it. Nice guitar work from Neils and Little Steven.
- Kingdom of Day:
- Surprise, Surprise: An uplifting little ditty that has a great summer, positive feel.
- The Last Carnival: I love this song. Very atmospheric with acoustic guitars and a great vocal from Bruce.
Overall, a VERY good Bruce Springsteen album that epitomizes his later years in terms of melodic creation. Few of the songs have the raw energy of a “Candy’s Room” or “Thunder Road” but much better than most of the shlock out there now called rock and roll. Four Stars.
