Yes, It’s really good. Is it great? Not on first listen. The first single “Get On Your Boots” and first track on the album “No Line on the Horizon” don’t portray the full album. There are elements of these songs that I like, but they tend to lose momentum in the song. All of the reviewers are fawning all over the fact that U2 has “reinvented” itself again, going with a harder edge and alternative feel. Personally, I’m not that crazy about the new sound with all of the minor keys, change in melodies mid-song.
The Tracks on the album:
- No Line on the Horizon: Up and down tempo, over emphasized chord play without the strong hook of Vertigo.
- Magnificent: One of my favorite songs on the album, lots of Edge’s ethereal guitar playing and overall better melody and rhythm. Sounds more like great U2.
- Moment of Surrender: Another strong melodic song that has an older, more mature sound that you could see evolve from October.
- Unknown Caller: Another great U2 song. Lots of organ/keys and excellent guitar work from the Edge.
- I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight: Bono says it all with “Every generation has a chance to change the world”. A great showcase for Bono’s vocals.
- Get on Your Boots: The first single on the album has some nice hooks, but loses momentum later in the song. It’s a different sound for U2 and I like elements of the song, but doesn’t keep me all the way through.
- Stand Up Comedy: I like this song quite a bit. Has a good drive, good hook and makes me wiggle.
- FEZ-Being Born: If I’m being honest, is sounds self indulgent like electronica dance floor crap. Don’t like it.
- White as Snow: A very introspective song with a light acoustic guitar touch. Quite lovely.
- Breathe:
- Cedars of Lebanon: Shades of Under a Blood Red Sky. Quiet, melodic, ethereal. I like it.
Overall, the album is quite good, but not great. I may change my mind after listening to it a few times, but give me Rattle and Hum any day.
