We had the great fortune of catching Boz Scaggs at the Woodland Park Zoo last night. Since we’ve been traveling so much this summer, we didn’t have tickets, but my daughter made a sign for me (Need Tickets - Please!) and we got some easily. The weather was PERFECT, sunny/warm/blue sky and the crowd was mostly older so fewer kids (except for ours and friends).
The opening act was a young Jewish accoustic blues guitar player/singer from Portland, OR named David Strain - he was great and has his first album out, but I didn’t see it on Rhapsody.
Boz Scaggs sounded GREAT. His voice has matured over the years. It’s deeper, sweeter and more resonant. I’m listening to the original Silk Degrees right now and I think he sounded better last night. One trick he has is a humidifier that blows moisture around the microphone - neat trick. The band consisted of Boz (vocals & guitar), Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard/Organ, Sax, Trumpet/Trombone and two black women backup singers. The entire band was awesome with the highlight being one of the backup singers who had a bit of a solo on an instrumental number in the middle of the show.
I had forgotten how many great songs he has and given the hard stop deadline at the Zoo, he couldn’t play them all - No “Breakdown Dead Ahead”, no “We’re All Alone”, but an amazing zoo anyhow.
